Do you have symptoms such as tiredness, hair loss, cold intolerance, dizziness, chronic headaches, difficulty concentrating and frequent colds? Chances are, that you do not have enough iron in your body.

  1. Iron is very important for the transport of oxygen to the cells in our body, for immune function and energy production.

2. Iron also plays an important role in the production of thyroid hormones and a deficiency of iron is common in people with hypothyroidism.

3. Iron is best absorbed from animal sources, as they contain the haem form, whereas plant sources have the non-haem form, which is not well absorbed. So in case you are following a vegetarian or vegan diet and have some of the symptoms I have mentioned the beginning, I would advise to have your iron levels checked.

4. Antacids can deplete iron in the body, because if you suppress stomach acid it can prevent the extraction from iron from the foods you eat.

5. What needs to be tested are your ferritin levels. Ferritin is a blood protein that contains iron and is a good predictor of how much iron you have stored in your body.

3 things you can do now

  1. Make an appointment with your GP to have your ferritin levels checked if you have any of the above symptoms.
  2. Start eating more foods that contain the version of iron that is easier absorbed, which is mainly found in animal products. The highest levels are found in liver, but if that is not your thing, increase your intake of beef, turkey and chicken for example.
  3. Vitamin C increases the absorption of iron, so have some vitamin C rich foods such as broccoli, red pepper and parsley with your beef, turkey or chicken.

Last but not least, if you are thinking of taking an iron supplement, do have your levels checked first and make sure you speak to your doctor, pharmacist or nutritionist about the right supplement and dose for you. Most iron supplements tend to be in the non-haem form and are not well absorbed and can cause stomach cramps and constipation.
